Tis the season for warm beverages and love in a mug! Dr. Lindsey Hanson’s winter tradition is to make mulled apple cider. She decided to share her recipe with us this year:
This recipe will make several servings. I usually make a batch and give it as gifts with a bottle of apple juice. If you wanted to make a smaller serving or single batch, then cut back on the ingredients!
10-12 cinnamon sticks (add to a freezer bag and crush with a rolling pin or something heavy)
1/3 cup coarsely chopped dried orange peel 1/4 cup allspice berries
1/4 cup whole cloves
2 tablespoons cardamon pods
2 tablespoons finely chopped crystallized ginger
1 tablespoons star anise
1 tablespoon peppercorns
Mix the ingredients in a bowl.
Dish out 2 TBSP of the spice mix into a small double layer square of cheese cloth (6 inch x 6 inch), tied with food safe twine. You can also use an empty single serve tea bag!
Each spice bag will make approximately 1/2 gallon (8 cups) of mulled apple cider.
To make mulled apple cider:
- Place the spice pouch and 1/2 gallon of apple juice in a pot.
- Bring the mix to a boil, cover, and simmer on low for about half an hour.
- Discard the spice pouch, and serve in mugs.
- Enjoy!
