Understanding Autism Through the Lens of Genetics, Detoxification, and Naturopathic Medicine
Attending the MAPS conference on “Autism and Genetics” left me inspired and overflowing with insights. Autism is a complex condition shaped by genetics, environment, and biochemistry—and diving into the role of genetic polymorphisms (SNPs) has deepened my understanding of how we can better support children on the spectrum. From mitochondrial function and detoxification to the gut-brain axis, we explored how imbalances in these systems—and genes like MTHFR, COMT, MAO, and FOLR1—can influence development, behavior, and neuroinflammation. But genes don’t dictate destiny. As naturopathic doctors, our work lies in identifying vulnerabilities and empowering families with holistic, personalized care to help each child thrive in their own way.
